Mumbai and its suburbs will witness hot and humid conditions on Friday, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The weather department has forecast a maximum temperature of around 35 degrees Celsius and a minimum temperature of 28 degrees Celsius for the day, indicating warm and humid conditions across the city.
Air quality stays in `satisfactory` category
Mumbai’s overall air quality remained in the `satisfactory` category on Friday, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 79, according to data from the Central Pollution Control Board’s Sameer App.
Several monitoring stations across the city also recorded satisfactory AQI levels.
AQI levels across Mumbai
Bandra Kurla Complex recorded an AQI of 115, while Borivali East stood at 91. Byculla reported an AQI of 70 and Andheri East recorded 101.
Chembur registered an AQI of 80, Colaba recorded 54, Ghatkopar stood at 101, and Kandivali reported an AQI of 74.
Air quality stable in MMR region
In the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), Thane recorded an AQI of 91, while Kalyan reported 88. Navi Mumbai registered an AQI of 93. All three locations continued to remain in the ‘satisfactory’ category.
Overall, weather and air quality conditions across Mumbai and adjoining areas remained stable, with no major concerns reported.
Kalyan to Mulund blurred as dust storm sweeps across MMR
Meanwhile, between 4.30 pm and 6.00 pm on Wednesday, a massive dust storm surged through Kalyan, Panvel, and Thane, stretching into the northern fringes of Mumbai as far as Mulund. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an urgent alert for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), warning of thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching up to 40 kmph. IMD also indicated the possibility of light rainfall in coastal regions south of Mumbai — Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg — accompanied by thundershowers.
Combined with strong winds, the storm reduced visibility and caused difficulty in breathing for commuters and residents in Thane, Badlapur, Ulhasnagar, Kalyan, Dombivali, Airoli, and Digha. Several residents took to social media to share visuals showing low visibility and large plumes of dust in the air.
IMD issues yellow alert
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and Raigad districts over the next four days, forecasting hot and humid conditions in isolated pockets, even as parts of the state are likely to witness rain and thunderstorms.
According to the IMD bulletin issued at 12:30 pm on Wednesday, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region will experience hot and humid weather until Saturday, with dry conditions expected on Sunday.
