Six-month-old captive tiger cub at Mumbai`s SGNP dies of infection

A captive tiger cub died after succumbing to an infection at Mumbai’s Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) on April 16.

The six-month-old cub was undergoing medical treatment for the past few weeks.

Born to SGNP`s captive Tigress Srivalli and Tiger Bajirao on Gandhi Jayanti last year, the cub was one of the quintuplets.

The captive tigers are part of the Tiger and Lion Safari at SGNP which was started in the 1990s and remains one of its most important tourist attractions.

Cub’s parents relocated to SGNP following human-animal conflict incidents

Bajirao, the cub`s father, had killed eight people in a span of 21 months at Rajura in Chandrapur. He was later captured by the Rajura Forest Department in Chandrapur Circle in 2020 and sent to captivity at SGNP.

Srivalli (also known as T24-C2), the mother of the late cub, was involved in a few human-animal conflict incidents in the Chandrapur area, in which two people were purportedly killed by the tigress. She was rescued and brought to SGNP in March 2022. Born inside Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve nearly a decade ago, the tigress was earlier encouraged to establish her own territory in its Moharli Range near Maharashtra’s Chandrapur.

Srivalli had delivered four cubs in captivity at SGNP in March 2023, too, but only one survived.
