Mumbai: Parked BEST electric bus rolls back, hits stall in Bhandup

Mumbai’s Bhandup West witnessed yet another alarming incident involving a Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) bus on Sunday afternoon, after a parked electric bus rolled backward and struck a nearby food stall outside Bhandup railway station. A woman standing close to the stall narrowly escaped injury after being pulled to safety at the last moment.

Driverless Bus Rolls Back Into Stall

According to eyewitness accounts and visuals from the scene, the BEST electric bus (MH-01 CV 8736) began rolling backward without a driver at the wheel. The vehicle eventually collided with a food stall in the busy area, sparking panic among pedestrians and vendors nearby.

Locals present at the spot said a woman standing close to the stall was quickly dragged away moments before the bus made impact, preventing what could have been a serious accident. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident.

Echoes of December 2025 Fatal Crash

The latest scare has revived memories of a tragic incident in December 2025 near the same location, when a BEST bus mounted a footpath during a manoeuvre. The crash had claimed four lives and left several others injured, raising serious questions about operational safety and oversight.

Residents Voice Concerns Over Safety

Although Sunday’s incident did not result in casualties, it has intensified concerns among local residents over the safety of parked and operating buses in the congested neighbourhood. Frequent movement of heavy vehicles in crowded public spaces continues to pose risks, residents said.

Authorities are yet to issue an official statement regarding the rollback incident. The BEST Public Relations Department did not respond to multiple queries made throughout the day.
