National Award-winning Bengali filmmaker Anik Dutta has died after suffering serious injuries due to a fall from the terrace of his residence, according to reports. Anik had reportedly been living alone at his Kolkata residence for the past few months and was rushed to the hospital after falling from his terrace earlier on Wednesday.

Anik Dutta was reportedly residing at Kolkata’s Hindustan Park. On Wednesday, May 27, he fell from his terrace, after which he was rushed to a hospital near Dhakuria in critical condition. He later succumbed to his injuries within a few hours. According to reports, the filmmaker had also been battling respiratory issues for a long time.
The acclaimed director is best known for films such as Bhooter Bhabishyat, Borunbabur Bondhu, Aparajito and Joto Kando Kolkatatei. His daughter reportedly resides in Mumbai.

Anik Dutta was the grandson of Narendra Chandra Dutta, founder of United Bank of India. He became a celebrated name in Bengali cinema with his debut film Bhooter Bhabishyat in 2012. The film featured Bengali actors like Sabyasachi Chakrabarty, Parambrata Chatterjee, Swastika Mukherjee and Saswata Chatterjee. The film gained fame across the country for its political satire, social commentary and horror-comedy elements.
Over the years, the filmmaker had carved a niche for himself with his storytelling style and unconventional narratives. Apart from direction, Anik also wrote most of his films. His signature style of filmmaking included showing the most tragic stories with sarcastic and witty dialogue. He had also received several awards and recognition for his films.
His last directorial venture, Joto Kando Kolkatatei, starring Abir Chatterjee, Quazi Nawshaba Ahmed and Dulal Lahiri in key roles, was released in September last year. During the release of Joto Kando Kolkatatei, Anik Dutta had reportedly expressed concerns that it could become his final directorial venture.
According to reports, the filmmaker was working on the sequel to his film Aparajito at the time of his death.
The Bengali filmmaker is survived by his separated partner Sandhi and a daughter, who lives in Mumbai. The filmmaker’s passing has brought significant grief to Bengali cinema.
