Small budget film Obsession beats Michael, Project Hail Mary and Dhurandhar 2

A tiny independent horror film made on a shoestring budget has pulled off the unthinkable at the 2026 box office. Titled Obsession, the supernatural thriller has become one of the most profitable films of the year, outperforming several massive studio-backed blockbusters in terms of return on investment. According to reports, the film was made for less than 1 million dollars roughly 7 crore rupees and has already earned close to 100 million dollars worldwide within days of release.

Obsession roars louder at Box office

Directed, written, and edited by filmmaker Curry Barker, Obsession stars Michael Johnston as Bear, a lonely music store employee who stumbles upon a mysterious supernatural toy capable of granting wishes. His desire to make childhood friend Nikki, played by Inde Navarrette, fall in love with him triggers terrifying consequences that spiral into psychological horror.

The film first premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival before receiving a theatrical release on May 15. Positive reviews and strong word-of-mouth quickly transformed the low-budget film into a surprise sensation. In North America alone, the movie saw its second weekend collections jump to nearly 22 million dollars, higher than its opening weekend numbers a rare feat in modern box-office trends.

Beats blockbuster hits like Project Hail Mary, Dhurandhar 2

What makes the achievement remarkable is how Obsession compares with far bigger productions. Project Hail Mary, starring Ryan Gosling, has earned over 675 million dollars globally but reportedly cost more than 200 million dollars to make. Similarly, Michael has grossed around 788 million dollars but was mounted on a huge studio budget.

Even internationally successful films like Dhurandhar: The Revenge, headlined by Ranveer Singh, generated about 17 times their production cost despite massive global collections.

Industry experts now believe Obsession could join the elite club of ultra-low-budget horror films such as The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity, which became cultural phenomena despite minimal production costs. If the film crosses the 100 million dollar mark soon, it will officially become only the third movie made for under 1 million dollars to achieve that milestone globally. The film has garnered attention by viewers for its storyline and the backstory of its making.
