MA distance students forced to enroll blindly as Mumbai University delays result

While Mumbai University has already opened admissions for MA Part II (second year), several students still await their first-year results. As mid-day reported on October 7, nearly 30 of the 86 students enrolled in the MA Geography (Distance Learning) course have yet to receive their Semester I results, even though the exams were held in January. The Semester II exams, conducted in July, are also pending evaluation for all students.

Despite the delays, students have begun paying fees and enrolling for the next academic year, but many are worried about their academic standing. “I’ve been extremely ill this year and have to visit the hospital every week. Due to medical reasons, I skipped the Semester II exams and only attempted Semester I,” said Jayashree W, a 42-year-old student. “But even those results, from exams held in January, are still missing. Now I have to blindly enrol for the next year without knowing how I performed.”

Students have also raised concerns about the lack of communication and poor support from the Centre for Distance and Online Education (CDOE). Those enrolled in distance courses often have to visit the Kalina campus in person for updates on results and admissions.

“The admission notice we received was apparently an extension. We never saw the original circular and had to confirm dates through our teachers,” said another distance-learning student, who is also a UGC-NET aspirant. “The registration for NET may begin next month, and I’ll need both Semester I and II results to be eligible. This delay puts my plans at risk.”

When mid-day reached out, CDOE Director Dr Shivaji Sargar said, “We have extended the admission window and the pending Semester I and II results will not affect student eligibility. We are working to deliver the missing results promptly. The delay occurred due to bottlenecks in the exam department.” The director added that students can reach out to the CDOE helpline (+91 86575 84311) for any results or admission-related queries.
