The city’s markets are bursting with energy and festive spirit on the occasion of Dhanteras, which marks the beginning of a week of Diwali festivities. Mumbaikars head to Dadar market in droves to make their Dhanteras purchases, as well as buy last-minute Diwali decor such as kandeels.

In Kalbadevi, businessmen flock to shops to buy “chopda” (book of accounts) for the Chopda puja, which marks an auspicious start to a new year in the business community. Most businesses have moved to digital bookkeeping, but buying a physical ledger remains a must for the ritual.
