The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Mumbai, on Saturday issued a nowcast warning at 1:10 PM IST, forecasting moderate spells of rain in several districts of Maharashtra over the next 3 to 4 hours. According to the IMD, isolated places in Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Dhule, Nandurbar, and the ghat regions of Pune, Satara, and Nashik are likely to witness intermittent showers.
The weather bureau has also extended a yellow alert for Mumbai till July 7, cautioning of heavy rainfall at isolated spots in the city and suburbs. This alert signifies the possibility of adverse weather conditions and urges residents to remain vigilant, especially in low-lying areas prone to waterlogging.
Mumbai, which has been experiencing steady monsoon showers over the past few days, is likely to continue receiving moderate to heavy rainfall, accompanied by cloudy skies and gusty winds. Saturday`s maximum temperature is expected to hover around 32 degrees Celsius, with minimum temperatures around 27 degrees Celsius.
On Sunday, July 6, the city is forecast to receive heavy morning showers, with occasional thunder, while July 7 will likely see intermittent rain and considerable cloudiness.
Lake levels in seven reservoirs supplying water to the city surge to 54.27 per cent
As per the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) records, on Saturday, the total water stock in the seven lakes supplying water to Mumbai stands at 7,85,492 million litres, which is 54.27 per cent of the total required stock for the season.
Notably, the Middle Vaitarna lake recorded the highest rise in level—1.40 metres in the last 24 hours—bringing its storage to 1,21,379 ML, or 62.72 per cent of its full capacity. Other major contributors include Upper Vaitarna at 69.40 per cent (157,570 ML), Modak Sagar at 67.50 per cent (87,028 ML), and Tansa at 53.82 per cent (78,083 ML).
Bhatsa, which supplies a significant share of Mumbai’s municipal needs, is currently at 45.41 per cent capacity, holding 3,25,598 ML. Vehar and Tulsi, the smaller lakes, are at 44.63 per cent and 43.15 per cent, respectively.
Among the highest rainfall figures in the past 24 hours were reported at Tulsi (122 mm), Vehar (65 mm), and Modak Sagar (81 mm). The total rainfall recorded across all lakes for this monsoon season so far is 1,44,736.3 mm for 2024, compared to 2,60,410 mm in 2023.
Key remarks note that Upper Vaitarna’s release was stopped on June 9 in 2025, the Middle Vaitarna WSCP Gate remains closed, and 578,250 ML from Bhatsa is earmarked for Mumbai’s municipal use. The Bhandup Complex, overseeing operations, recorded 47 mm rainfall today and a cumulative total of 600 mm.
